Beekeeping: a time-honoured tradition

About me

Hello, my name is David Abraham Vera Rosales and I live with my family in Chile. I’ve been a beekeeper for 19 years now – just like my father, who taught me everything.

Together with my wife and son, I harvest around 6,000 kg of honey a year. I sell about half of that to Fairtrade.

Beekeeping in my home country, Chile

In southern Chile, we have the best honeys in the world. Our honeys undergo strict quality controls. I wish consumers were willing to pay a little more. Producing honey isn’t cheap, and it’s becoming increasingly expensive.

A changing climate, a changing beekeeping industry

The climate has become very unpredictable in recent years. The weather swings from extreme heat to rain, which naturally also affects the bees’ food sources. They are defenceless against these changes and rely on our help. We need to provide them with extra food and look after them carefully.
