A special honey in our range is Breitsamer “Imkergold Fairtrade”. These honeys don’t come from Europe, but from small rural apiaries in South and Central America. The difference here is the production according to Fairtrade standards, indicated to consumers by use of the Fairtrade seal. As a family company, for us, this is a convincing argument to keep a honey from Latin America in our range. According to the Fairtrade standards, the beekeepers receive a fixed minimum price for their honeys, long-term supply agreements and the option to participate in the cooperative business.
Honey is a handcrafted product and the apiary offers people a vital source of income – even those who don’t own land. Even as a side-line enterprise, the apiary offers good possibilities to secure an income and possibly even to balance out crop failures, e.g. for coffee farmers. Not to be ignored are also the higher harvest quantities of other crops such as coffee due to the pollination activity of the bees. All this led the Breitsamer family company to convert the ”Imkergold” honeys to Fairtrade quality.
As with all Breitsamer honeys, the consumer can find the exact origin of the honey produced in Latin America by looking at the jar.
We see it as our task to support beekeeping projects worldwide and expand these continually. A fair and sustainable relationship between man and nature is a matter of course for us. Only if all participants act fairly towards one another, is sustainable resource use possible. www.fairtrade-deutschland.de
