Breitsamer is conscious of their responsibility
As a family and traditional company, at Breitsamer, we are aware of our responsibility towards people and nature. We also want to impart to the generations to come what makes honey so special. This is why we engage in such various projects. For one thing, we see it as our task to support beekeeping projects worldwide and expand these continually. Only if all participants act fairly towards one another, then sustainable resource use is possible.
How does our climate protection project work?
Climate protection projects demonstrably cut down greenhouse gases, e.g. through reforestation or energy efficiency. Independent organisations such as the TÜV (Technical Monitoring Organisation) control the exact level of savings. Only projects, which require additional funding, are recognised as certified climate protection projects.
Chulika ovens are improving the situation
Almost 90% of households in rural India do not use renewable biomass to produce heat. Cooking is mostly done with wood and other combustible materials on inefficient clay ovens. This doesn’t just lose a significant amount of energy, the toxic smoke worsens air pollution and with it, India’s biggest threat to health, which takes the lives of 875,000 people each year. In addition to that, biomass has become scarce and expensive due to massive consumption.
To tackle this problem, the “Janara Samuha Mutual Benefit Trust” was founded by women from the Raichur community. Together, they developed the Chulika oven, which requires almost 70% less combustion material. More than 21,500 units have already been sold for a subsidised price.
Households using the Chulika are saving up to four hours of time each day for the procurement of combustion material to burn, thanks to the high efficiency of the oven. This brings economic advantages with it and unburdens women above all. Through the reduced smoke emission when cooking, the health situation for families is improved considerably.
Contribution to sustainable development goals (SDGs)
- Goals 1 and 8 – No poverty, workplaces, economic growth:
Saving time and earnings in the procurement of combustion material, jobs in production, sales and maintenance of the ovens, promoting regionally added value through local production.
- Goal 5 – Equality of the sexes:
Strengthening the role of women
- Goal 3 – Health:
Lower health risks due to improved air quality in homes
- Goal 15 – Life on the land:
Protecting forests through reduced demand for firewood
- Goal 13 – Climate protection measures
Breitsamer honey stands for naturalness and careful craftsmanship. We attach great importance to the quality and taste of our honeys. We have even higher quality demands than required by the German Honey Regulation.
In detail, this means:
- Calculating CO2
We record all CO2 emissions, which occur in our operations and along the supply chain of our products. All emissions are reduced as much as we can. The calculation is based on the international standards of the “Greenhouse Gas Protocols”; the process is certified by TÜV Austria.
- Balanced CO2
We are supporting the first internationally recognised fairtrade climate protection project in India which is certified gold standard according to the fairtrade climate standards. This project is reducing the amount of CO2 emissions that we cause at the location in India.
- Labelling and transparency
The origin of every honey can be found on its jar. Accordingly, the emission offset can be understood at www.climatepartner.com with the particular ID number. With each ID number, you can then understand the offsetting of emissions.
Our “Imkergold Fairtrade” is the first climate-neutral honey from the Breitsamer range – and in this regard, a pioneer in the honey market.
Good reasons for the climate-neutral honey in our range and at home.
Contribute to climate protection!
- By using climate-neutral “Imkergold Fairtrade” honey, you are supporting the approved climate protection project with the highest standards – gold standard and fairtrade climate standard
• We carry the costs for the offsetting of CO2 – from the beehive to the bread
• Complete transparency about the origin
• Taking joint responsibility for people and nature – today and tomorrow
