Breitsamer is conscious of their responsibility
As a family and traditional company, at Breitsamer, we are aware of our responsibility towards people and nature. We also want to impart to the generations to come what makes honey so special. This is why we engage in such various projects. For one thing, we see it as our task to support beekeeping projects worldwide and expand these continually. Only if all participants act fairly towards one another, is sustainable resource use possible.
How does our climate protection project work?
Climate protection projects demonstrably cut down greenhouse gases, e.g. through reforestation or energy efficiency. Independent organisations such as the TÜV (Technical Monitoring Organisation) control the exact level of savings. Only projects which require additional funding are recognised as certified climate protection projects.
Biotope protection in native forests
As an ecosystem, the forest fulfils diverse functions and constitutes our basis for life. Around 2,000 people work in 51 German locations to protect the forests each year.
For centuries, intensive agriculture and industrial mining have transformed the once primeval forests into a cultural landscape with monocultures. Bird and bat species, beetles, bees and rare insects have lost their original habitat along with the mixed woodland. Since 2006, volunteers are working against this.
In Clausthal-Zellerfeld in Upper Harz, on the border of the Harz national park, volunteers and experts are committed to the Bergwald project association and to protecting the biotope. They shape species-rich and protective forest edges by planting hazel, elder, wild pear, cherry, blackthorn, beech, black alder and sycamore trees suitable for the location. At the same time, they protect old native spruce trees. This is how a healthy mixed woodland grows, which is resistant against the effects of climate change. With great effort, they create areas for bats to breed and hibernate. The volunteers uncover old mining runnels and prepare them for bat habitation. Even old factories or hollows and cracks in trees are important refuges for the animals.
The contribution to the Bergwald project also funds outreach weeks. These are important for regional climate protection, but achieve no certified CO2 reduction. To guarantee climate neutrality, ClimatePartner also supports an internationally recognised forest protection project in Papua-New Guinea: www.climate-project.com/1032
Contribution to sustainable development goals (SDGs)
- Goal 13 – Climate protection measures: Germany is a pioneer in terms of the energy transition and would like to further strengthen this role in terms of sustainable development worldwide.
- Goal 15 – Life on the land: Protecting country ecosystems, promoting their restoration and sustainable use, cultivating forests sustainably, stopping and reversing land degradation, and preventing the loss of biodiversity.
Breitsamer honey stands for naturalness and careful craftsmanship. We attach a great importance to the quality and taste of our honeys. Our quality demands are even higher than required by the German Honey Regulation.
In detail, this means:
- Calculating CO2
We record all CO2 emissions which occur in our operations and along the supply chain or our products. All emissions are reduced as much as we can. The calculation is based on the international standards of the “Greenhouse Gas Protocols”, the process is certified by TÜV Austria.
- Balancing CO2
We support the recognised gold standard climate protection project in Harz, Germany. Through the project, native forests are protected with the help of volunteers and experts. In combination with an internationally recognised forest protection project in Papua-New Guinea, the amount of CO2 emitted as a result of our organic honey from the production to bottling to the consumption and disposal is reduced.
- Labelling and transparency
The origin of every honey can be found on its beaker. Accordingly the emission offset can be understood at www.climatepartner.com with the particular ID number.
We are pioneers in sustainability in the German honey market.
Good reasons for the climate-neutral honey in our range and at home.
Contribute to climate protection!
- By using climate-neutral Bioland honey in a paper beaker, you are supporting the approved climate protection project
• We carry the costs for the offsetting of CO2 – from the beehive to the bread
• Transparency about the origin and the offsetting of emissions
• Taking joint responsibility for people and nature – today and tomorrow
